چکیده

The random midpoint displacement method is a widely applied algorithm used for terrain simulation. This paper first reviews the underlying theory and the algorithm of the random midpoint displacement method and then analyzes the characteristics of the simulated terrain. An implementation is developed for the successive random addition midpoint displacement method using the programming language C. Several terrains are then generated with different parameters. The fractal dimensions of these simulated terrains as well as five selected natural digital terrains from the Taiwan area are computed via the variogram method. The comparison indicates that the natural digital elevation models (DEMs) are more anisotropic than the simulated terrains. This finding agrees with the expectation that fractal terrains in general have no inherent global erosion features due to their isotropy and stationarity.

Dynamic Instability Analysis of Transverse Vibrations of Functionally Graded Rectangular Plates under Moving Masses

In this paper, dynamic instability due to parametric and external resonances of moderately thick functionally graded rectangular plates, under successive moving masses, is examined. Plate mass per unit volume and Young’s modulus are assumed to vary continuously through the thickness of the plate and obey a power-law distribution of the volume fraction of the constituent. The considered rectangu...

Fast Generation and Surface Structuring Methods for Terrain and Other Natural Phenomena

Fractal geometry has proven to be a powerful tool for modeling natural phenomena. Using discrete approximations to fractional Brownian motion over a finite grid plane, computer graphics terrain-rendering algorithms are able to generate highly realistic topographical displays. Similar procedures can be applied to model other natural phenomena, such as clouds and water. Two important consideratio...

Numerical Simulation of Random Irregular Waves for Wave Generation in Laboratory Flumes

Understanding of wave hydrodynamics and its effects are important for engineers and scientists. Important insights may be gained from laboratory studies.  Often the waves are simulated in laboratory flumes do not have the full characteristics of real sea waves. It is then necessary to present reliable methods of wave generation in wave flumes.  In this paper, the results of numerically simulate...

On a Moving Base Robotic Manipulator Dynamics

There are many occasions where the base of a robotic manipulator is attached to a moving platform, such as on a moving ship, terrain or space shuttle. In this paper a dynamic model of a robotic manipulator mounted on a moving base is derived using both Newton-Euler and Lagrange-Euler methods. The presented models are simulated for a Mitsubishi PA10-6CE robotic manipulator characteristics mounte...

The Influence of landform, Terrain Shape Index and Aspect Slop on the Structural Distribution of Mixed Stands in the Arasbaran Forest by Ordination Method (Case Study: Kaleybarchay Watershed)

The forest structure and stand composition are controlled by several physiographic factors, because these factors play an important role in control the physical and chemical conditions of the environment, including access to light, soil moisture, and nutrients. In this study, the physiographic characteristics indices of the study area including landform index, terrain shape index and aspect slo...
